Choosing Your Steel: VG1 Stainless vs Carbon Steel

· carbon steel, knife care, steel guide, VG1

Every Mononofu knife is available in two steel options. Here's how to choose the right one for you.

VG1 Stainless Steel

  • Corrosion resistant — handles moisture, sweat, and saltwater
  • Lower maintenance — no oiling required
  • Excellent edge retention — stays sharp through heavy use
  • Best for: EDC, outdoor carry, humid environments

Carbon Steel

  • Takes a finer edge — can be sharpened to razor sharpness
  • Develops a patina — unique character over time
  • Requires oiling — needs care to prevent rust
  • Best for: Collectors, traditionalists, controlled environments

Our Recommendation

If you're carrying daily and don't want to think about maintenance, go stainless. If you appreciate the craft of maintaining a blade and want the sharpest possible edge, go carbon.

Both options are hand-forged by the same craftsman using the same process. The only difference is the steel — and the relationship you'll build with your blade.
